The Dragon Hotel has been at the heart of Montgomery life for almost 400 years. Our heritage and a sense of community is something we are extremely proud of. Even today, the hotel remains central to community life in the town.
The Dragon is in the centre of this beautiful, unspoilt little Georgian Town, right on Market Square to the rear of the magnificent 17th Century Town Hall. The Dragon is the perfect place to unwind and forget the pressures of daily life for a while.
Situated a short distance from the Offa’s Dyke path, is a great stop-over to rest and recuperate. The hotel is located in the heart of some of Wales’ – and Britain’s – most beautiful countryside, just a mile from the Welsh border.
Whether you are staying with us for some much needed rest, or whether you wish to explore the glorious surrounding countryside, from the moment you arrive until you check out again, we take pride in making sure you will feel welcomed and cared for.
The Dragon Hotel was originally built in the 16th century and was owned by the Powis estate until 1975, when it was sold. It was their principal coaching inn, although its first recorded use as such was not until 1770 when it was then called the Green Dragon. Its name changed to the Dragon at some point in the 1850s.
For centuries, horses and coaches were driven right through the centre of the hotel to stables at the rear. This covered coachway, now closed in, forms the main entrance to the hotel.
It is believed that some of the building materials used to finish the hotel’s construction came from the castle, destroyed by Cromwell’s men in 1648. Its present four-bay frontage dates from the Georgian period, in the late 18th or early 19th century. Its black and white fascia was added in the late 19th century.
The most notable features are the original sixteenth century moulded beams in the restaurant, which are said to be of a quality unmatched anywhere else in Montgomery. Also of note is the large 16th century fireplace in what is now the Dragon’s Den.
Today, whilst the hotel retains many of its historic and quirky features, the Dragon is a modern, comfortable place to stay, with all the features and amenities you would expect for a relaxing getaway.
We pride ourselves on the thoughtful, attentive way we treat our guests. We work very hard to make sure that guests feel as though they are ‘at home’ from the moment they arrive to when they check out.
The hotel has three main function rooms; our large bar area, with various areas including a conservatory and a raised area with sofas. Guests can dine here for a more casual, relaxed meal. Alternatively, there is our main restaurant for more formal, intimate dining. Finally, we have our Dragon’s den which is great for private events, such as meetings, private dining, small gatherings and weddings. See our wedding page for more information.
Please note: the hotel has its own car park to the rear, with access from Kerry Street.
The hotel has 20 rooms of various types and sizes.

As would be expected with any 17th century building, the hotel has its own idiosyncrasies – including the odd 250 year-old creaking floorboard! This is all part of its character and charm and what sets it apart.
The hotel is situated over three floors, with 14 of the bedrooms on the first floor and six on the upper floor. Some of these have sloping roofs and exposed beams. Stairs to the upper floor are fairly narrow and because of the layout of this historic building, there are no lifts. However, our staff will be happy to carry bags up to your rooms for you. If you have mobility issues, please contact the hotel to talk about your needs before booking your room. Because of the nature of the building, there are no specific facilities for guests with mobility issues. However, we always do our best to accommodate your needs, so please ask.
